The ADOS-2

The Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule, Second Edition (ADOS-2) is the "gold standard" for autism diagnosis. At Skill Builders ABA, we use this comprehensive tool to accurately assess communication, social interaction, and play in individuals of all ages to build the most effective path forward.

What is the ADOS-2?

A Gold Standard

Recognized globally by clinicians and researchers as the most accurate and reliable instrument for diagnosing Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).

Play-Based Interaction

It is not a medical test with needles or machines. It is a semi-structured observation that looks like playing with toys or having a conversation.

Accurate Diagnosis

The results provide a detailed look at current skills and behaviors, allowing our team to create a personalized and effective treatment plan.

What does the ADOS-2 measure?

The assessment consists of standardized activities that allow the clinician to observe behaviors that have been identified as important to the diagnosis of ASD.

Some of the main areas the ADOS-2 measures include:

  • Social communication: How the individual uses gestures, facial expressions, and words to communicate.
  • Social Interaction: How the individual responds to their name, shares enjoyment, and engages in back-and-forth interaction.
  • Play & creativity: How the child talks and responds during social situations
  • Restricted & repetitive behaviors: Observation of sensory interests, hand flapping, or repetitive speech patterns.

ADOS-2 modules explained

The ADOS-2 is not a "one size fits all" test. It is divided into modules based on the individual's language ability and age. The clinician will select the appropriate module for your child.

  • Toddler Module: For children between 12 and 30 months of age who do not yet use phrase speech.
  • Module 1: For children 31 months and older who do not consistently use phrase speech.
  • Module 2: For children of any age who use phrase speech but are not yet verbally fluent.
  • Module 3: For verbally fluent children and young adolescents.
  • Module 4: For verbally fluent older adolescents and adults.

Understanding the ADOS-2 results

After the assessment, the clinician scores the observation based on a standardized algorithm. These scores are compared to a cutoff point that indicates the level of autism-related symptoms.

The results will classify the score into categories such as "Autism," "Autism Spectrum," or "Non-Spectrum." It is important to note that the ADOS-2 is just one part of a comprehensive evaluation. Our clinicians combine these scores with developmental history and parent interviews to provide a confirmed medical diagnosis.

Who can take the ADOS-2?

The ADOS-2 is designed for a wide age range and developmental levels. Because it relies on modules tailored to language ability, it can be used for non-verbal toddlers as well as verbally fluent adults. It is the preferred method for getting an accurate baseline before starting ABA therapy.

FAQs

We understand that the diagnostic process can be overwhelming, and you likely have many questions about what to expect. To help you feel prepared and confident, we have compiled answers to the most common inquiries regarding the ADOS-2 assessment, insurance coverage, and how our team supports you through the evaluation.

How long does the ADOS-2 appointment take?

keyboard_arrow_down

The administration of the test usually takes 40 to 60 minutes. However, you should plan for a 90-minute appointment to allow time for intake and discussion.

Can parents stay in the room during the test?

keyboard_arrow_down

For the Toddler Module and Module 1, a parent is present and involved in the activities. For Modules 3 and 4 (older/fluent children), the parent usually waits in the lobby to ensure the child responds naturally to the clinician.

Do I need to prepare my child for the test?

keyboard_arrow_down

No preparation or "studying" is needed. It is best if the child is well-rested and fed. Tell them they are going to play with some toys and talk to a teacher.

Does insurance cover the ADOS-2?

Most insurance plans cover diagnostic testing for autism. Our team can help verify your benefits prior to the appointment.
