Task Analysis

Task Analysis is a core ABA technique used to teach multi-step or complex skills by breaking them down into simple, sequential steps. Each step is taught individually, allowing the child to build confidence and independence as they master one part of the skill before moving on to the next.

This approach is commonly used for daily living tasks—such as brushing teeth, getting dressed, preparing snacks, or following multi-step instructions. By simplifying complex activities, Task Analysis makes learning more accessible and reduces frustration.

Therapists can teach the sequence using different prompting strategies:

  • Forward chaining (teaching the first step first)

  • Backward chaining (teaching the last step first)

  • Total-task chaining (practicing the entire sequence with support)

These strategies ensure that learning is systematic, measurable, and adapted to the child’s needs and abilities.

Examples

  • Teaching handwashing by breaking it into steps: turn on water → wet hands → pump soap → scrub → rinse → dry.

  • Teaching how to make a sandwich: get bread → spread peanut butter → add jelly → put slices together → cut.

  • Teaching classroom routines by listing steps in order and practicing each one.

Why It Matters

Many important life skills are complex and can feel overwhelming when taught as a single action. Task Analysis simplifies learning, increases independence, and builds confidence by giving children clear, achievable steps.

This approach is especially valuable for developing self-care, academic routines, and home or school independence—ultimately improving quality of life and functional autonomy.
