Registered Behavior Technician (RBT)

A Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) is the team member who provides the day-to-day, hands-on therapy with your child. RBTs complete specialized training in behavior analysis and work under the ongoing supervision of a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA).

Their role is to run the individualized programs created by the BCBA, collect accurate data on progress, and ensure your child receives consistent, high-quality teaching across sessions. RBTs use strategies such as prompting, modeling, reinforcement, and structured or naturalistic teaching depending on the treatment plan.

Because RBTs spend the most direct time with the child, they play a critical role in helping children acquire new skills, practice them consistently, and generalize them across settings.

Examples

  • An RBT runs teaching trials at home while collecting data on correct responses.
  • An RBT supports communication practice during play or daily routines.
  • An RBT helps generalize skills by practicing them in different rooms, with different materials, or with caregivers present.

Why It Matters

Effective ABA depends on consistent, high-quality implementation, and RBTs make this possible. Their daily interactions provide the repetition, engagement, and personalized teaching necessary for meaningful progress.

Their collaboration with the BCBA ensures that therapy stays aligned with goals, remains ethical, and constantly adapts to your child’s needs.
