How do I know if my ABA provider is qualified and ethical?

A qualified and ethical ABA provider is led by a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA), the credentialed professional responsible for designing and supervising treatment. The provider should create individualized plans based on data, adjust goals according to the child’s progress, and maintain open communication with families. Ethical providers use a variety of teaching strategies—not only structured drills—and they rely on positive reinforcement rather than aversive or coercive techniques. They should welcome collaboration with Speech Therapy, Occupational Therapy, schools, and medical teams to support consistent, integrated care. Be cautious of providers who guarantee a “cure,” discourage coordination with other professionals, or rely on outdated compliance-based approaches.

Examples

  • A BCBA regularly reviews data with the family and adjusts goals as needed.
  • A provider proactively communicates with the child’s SLP or OT to align strategies.

When to Seek Support

Seek further evaluation or consider switching providers if the team cannot explain their data, avoids collaborating with other professionals, or makes unrealistic promises about treatment outcomes.
