How can I support my child's communication while waiting for an evaluation?

Waiting for an evaluation can be stressful, but you don't have to wait for a label to start helping. You can implement Natural Environment Teaching (NET) strategies at home immediately. This involves following your child's lead during play and "narrating" their life to build a language-rich environment. Focus on functional communication—helping them find ways to tell you what they need, whether through sounds, signs, or pictures.

Examples

  • Narrating: "You have the blue car! Vroom, vroom goes the car!"
  • Controlling Access: Putting a favorite toy slightly out of reach so they have a reason to initiate communication with you to get it.

When to Seek Support

If your child becomes highly frustrated or engages in self-injury because they cannot communicate their needs, specialized intervention strategies can help bridge the gap while you wait for the formal diagnosis.
